The question all year has been whether a rotation held together by tape, hope, and Shota Imanaga’s right arm could survive August and September. Hoyer’s answer was to go get arms. Plural. This is a guy who’s been unlucky, not declining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He’s 35, and he’s a two-month rental \u2014 no illusions about that. But bringing him in gives the Cubs something they haven’t had all year: a healthy<\/em>, established frontline arm to slot behind Imanaga. Bateman and Southisene are solid prospects who likely profile as future bench pieces rather than everyday players, which makes this about as reasonable a cost as you’ll find for a rotation piece of Gausman’s caliber at the deadline. Good value, aggressive intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cubs get:<\/strong> LHP Braxton Garrett Cubs give up:<\/strong> 1B Jonathon Long, RHP Jace Beck<\/p>\n\n\n\n This one’s the swing-for-2027 pick hiding inside a “we’re going for it now” deadline. Garrett is only 28, and back in 2023 he posted a 4.3 bWAR season for Miami that made scouts take notice. Then Tommy John surgery wiped out most of 2024 and all of 2025. His two starts back with the Marlins this year have been ugly \u2014 a 14.54 ERA \u2014 and he’s already been optioned down to Triple-A Iowa. But dig into what he did before<\/em> those two rusty starts: a 2.90 ERA over 77.2 innings in the minors as he built back up. The stuff is coming back. The command is coming back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Long, the Cubs’ No. 16 prospect, was blocked at first base and DH in Chicago anyway \u2014 he’ll actually get a chance to play in Miami. Beck, ranked 28th in the system, is a 6-foot-9 righty with a mid-90s fastball and real extension who’s quietly turned himself into a legitimate relief prospect after signing as a minor-league free agent. Neither loss stings much. If Garrett rediscovers even 80% of his pre-surgery form in 2027, this is a heist. If not, the cost was minimal. Low risk, real upside \u2014 exactly the kind of bet a front office should be making at the margins of a bigger deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cubs get:<\/strong> RHP Ryan Zeferjahn Cubs give up:<\/strong> C\/1B Moises Ballesteros, INF Mason McGwire<\/p>\n\n\n\n The bullpen mattered too, and this is the move that says so. Ballesteros has long been a well-regarded prospect in the system, so parting with him wasn’t nothing \u2014 but the Cubs clearly decided they had a surplus at that spot and a genuine need for late-inning arms they can trust in October baseball. Zeferjahn slots in as exactly that kind of piece: a power arm who can eat high-leverage innings without the front office having to hold its breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Don’t sleep on the moves that set the table before the big names hit. Back in June, the Cubs grabbed lefty David Peterson<\/strong> from the Mets for a modest price in Cole Mathis, and he’s rewarded them \u2014 strong in four of his five outings since arriving. Aaron Civale<\/strong> came over from Oakland, giving the staff a swingman who can start or bridge innings out of the pen. And Jameson Taillon<\/strong>, once a rotation cornerstone, was DFA’d and eventually shipped to Toronto for cash or a PTBNL \u2014 a quiet, slightly bittersweet ending for a guy who gave this organization real innings, but a necessary subtraction to make room for the bigger additions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Stack it all together \u2014 Peterson, Civale, Gausman, Garrett, Zeferjahn \u2014 and the picture is unmistakable. This wasn’t a front office patching holes. This was a front office that looked at a offense that can rake with anybody, decided the arms were the only thing standing between this team and a real October run, and went out and got them. Four separate trades to fortify one part of the roster is not a subtle strategy. It’s a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As if the deadline fireworks weren’t enough, the Cubs turned right around and took Game 1 of the Dodgers series at Wrigley, 10-5, in front of a crowd that had to be feeling every bit of this moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Dodgers actually punched first \u2014 Tommy Edman’s three-run homer in the top of the first staked LA to an early 3-2 lead, and for a second you could feel the ghosts stirring. Then the Cubs just… kept answering. Kevin Alcantara went deep. Michael Busch launched one and drove in three. Seiya Suzuki got in on it too. And Carson Kelly, not exactly a name that jumps off the page, added a three-run shot of his own. Four different Cubs left the yard against a Dodgers pitching staff that’s supposed to make lineups look silly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Matthew Boyd wasn’t sharp exactly \u2014 six-plus innings, four earned, a couple of homers allowed \u2014 but he battled, got through 6.2 frames, and handed the ball to a bullpen that slammed the door. Jake Woodford and Trent Thornton combined for the final stretch and didn’t allow a run between them. On the other side, Dodgers starter Justin Wrobleski took the loss after allowing seven earned runs in 4.1 innings \u2014 the kind of final line that tells you this Cubs lineup simply would not let up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And yes, for anyone keeping score at home: Mookie Betts went 0-for-4. Shohei Ohtani had two hits but nothing to show for it. Freddie Freeman singled once and that was about it.
